A Mark Twain quote I read recently “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or pause and reflect).”
When was the last time that a fundamental belief system you held, was totally flipped on its head and the net result was an alternative belief system?
For example, most of the world at one time believed the earth was flat.
This may seem like an obvious one, but many people still believe that it’s still flat despite the images from space that look real to me.
Another example, they thought masturbation caused blindness (as documented in early medical journals). If that were the case, seeing-eye dogs would be a multi-billion dollar business, and you’d be reading this via braille, you kinky minx!
They prescribed cigarettes for nerves and carrots to improve people eyesight. Both have been since dismissed as clever marketing ploys.
I have experienced a few of these shifts in my life and it’s made me realise that for me to grow, I must remain open-minded to many ideas and beliefs that I encounter, even if an overwhelming number of people and scientists believe otherwise.
My challenge to you today is simple.
Ask yourself the following question.
Would I bet my life on what I am about to say next, being the absolute truth?
If it’s a no, then until you can say yes….. maybe it’s best we hold our tongues.
